The Irony

Dirty Money looks pretty good: it’s a documentary about Brazilian skate culture.

Apparently they’re not interested in sponsorship or any of that jazz – just making videos and having a good old time. Which is cool. Except that in the bottom corner of the film’s website it says “Patrocínio Cultural: Nike SB” which, for the lusophonically-challenged, means that it was sponsored by some sportswear company or other. Does that make the film’s title really ironic? Not sure. Looks like a fun movie though, still.

    The story goes: Kids in the 90s were sponsored by companies that went broke with the huge economic crisis. Then they said, “You know what? We don’t need sponsorship to have fun!” They weren’t protesting sponsorship. They were ABANDONED by the sponsors. It wasn’t political or anything. Everybody was broke. It was ugly. Believe me, I was there. So they decided to make videos anyways. ‘Cause having tournaments was too expensive and all.

    Then, 20 years later, two filmmakers got those videos and used them as the basis for a doc. They interviewed the kids, who are adults now obviously. Nike footed the bill of the doc. And when Nike foots the bill, they’re not particularly discreet about that. They’re even launching some new shoes (sorta cute too) to commemorate the film.

    So, yeah, it’s a tiny bit ironic, but less than you seem to be suggesting :)

  2. Heheh, I’m not sure I even know what irony means, to be honest. I have no doubt the shoes are fly (although my skater friends tell me they’re all style and no substance…) and of course skating and sponsorship go way back. I just wouldn’t have called the movie ‘Dirty Money’, I think.
